Winter can be a tough sport for BBQ enthusiasts. The cold weather, darker nights, and lack of daylight hinder the love of the sport. I'm here to show you some winter BBQ tips to keep you warm and your belly full of amazing BBQ food all year round. Winter grilling tips to help you get to some warmer days.
WINTER GRILLING TIPS
FUEL: You burn more fuel during the winter months. Make sure to stock up so you don't run out half way through your cook. I personally love using Charcoal Chariots XL Lump Charcoal OR If I'm using my pellet grill, Pit Boss Grills Pellet Blends.
SNOW: Clear off all pathways and walkways to your BBQ. You want your grill to be ready when you are to grill. With these winter grilling tips, it might seem obvious, but you don't want that little obstacle to prevent you from getting outside and BBQ.
GRILL COVERS: secure your grill cover to your grill. Once it blows off into the snow it will freeze. Once my covers blow into the snow, I typically don't see them until the spring. Avoid this by pinching the bottom under a wheel or pinch it under the lid to be more secure.
ADD WATER: warm air has a lot more moisture than cold air. By adding moisture, like a small pan with water in it adds more smoke flavor. MEAT THERMOMETERS: It is best if you have a grill that has a built in meat thermometer with Bluetooth / WIFI technologies. That way you can keep an eye on the temperature without lifting the lid and loosing heat.
FOOD PREPARATION: Do most of your food preparation inside and bring outside ready to go. Make sure to wear proper winter clothing while outside on your grill. I have these gloves that are small, and have the fingers cut out of them. I can easily put food grade gloves over top in if you needed to. PREHEATING TIME: your preheating time will take slightly longer to get up to regular temperature. Depending on your grill, add an extra 5-10 minutes of prep time. LIFTING LID: this winter grilling tips seems obvious to some, but the more you can keep that grill lid closed, the more heat will be retained. KEEPING YOUR FUEL DRY: If your storing your wood, charcoal, pellets outdoors, make sure it is covered from the elements. These types of fuel requires dry application. I like to keep my fuel in my garage and not directly outside.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT GRILL FOR WINTER GRILLING Choosing the right BBQ for winter grilling is key. With colder temperatures and higher winds you burn more fuel, naturally.
Using a charcoal BBQ? Picking a clay based Kamado style grill will hold your heat MUCH better than a steel or aluminum barrel. You can still grill on those, just ensure extra fuel to accommodate. You are here for ALL winter grilling tips, so if using a Weber style charcoal grill, try and place it in a secluded area where the wind is minimal and you are covered from the elements. I love using my Louisiana Grills Kamado K24 for winter charcoal grilling.
Using a pellet smoker? Did you know that some pellet grills from Pit Boss Grills has double walled lids? Like the Navigator series (check it out here). It's an extra heavy lid, feels solid and warm. Whenever I'm shopping for my next grill I always make sure it has a double walled insulated lid. It helps keep the warmth inside your grill, your pellets burning consistently, your food smokey and delicious. Also try and keep your grill away from wind and snow elements to help keep the warmth inside and not outside in the cold.
